Xerocomus persicolor
H. Engel, Klofac, H. Grünert & R. GrĂ¼nert
One of the 'youngest' European Xerocomus species is X. persicolor, described in 1996 by a team of German specialists. This taxon has been observed for many years in the Mediterranean area also by French and Italian mycologists, who came to know it under names such as X. sordescens. It seems to be very close to X. armeniacus, but X. persicolor is usually characterised by pink cap colours, while X. armeniacus has a usually apricot orange or reddish cap. (m.f.)
