Russula messapica is one of the first Russulae described by Sarnari; it is quite common in some regions of Southern Italy, and it has been collected also in France and Spain.

One of the striking features of this species is the yellow veil present on the stipe and in almost every part of the fruit-body, which stains bright red with KOH.
