Russula illota is a distinctive taxon among the European species of subsect. Foetentinae: the gill edge is decorated by violaceous-brown dots and lines, and the same colour may be observed in the slime covering the cap and stipe of the fungus.

A close-up of the spotted gills of Russula illota; because of the 'dot-line' pattern visible on the gill, the German name of this fungus is 'Morse-Täubling'.
