Russula elegans (in the sense of Romagnesi) grows with Populus spp. Such as P. canescens on alluvial soil, often accompanied by Russula clariana.

It is characterised by its ecology, the yellowing stipe base and the reticulate spores. Russula arpalices Sarnari only differs by having attenuate hairs in the pileipellis.
