Russula camarophylla is a rare European species that belongs to section Archaeinae. Its features and European distribution were recently discussed in the Bulletin of the French Mycological Society (Buyck, B., Hériveau, P. & Roger, M. (2003, publ. 2004) – Quelques récoltes récentes de Russula camarophylla. Bull. Soc. Mycol. France 119 (3-4): 217-229.)

The gills of Russula camarophylla are very distant and decurrent, making it a very remarkable taxon in the European Russula flora.
