The colours of R. brunneoviolacea resemble those of the species of subsect. Atropurpurinae: the pale cream spore print and the mild taste allow to recognize it in the field.

Microscopically, typical forms present a very pronounced sporal ornamentation, with long spines which are often curved at the apex.
