Original diagnosis
Russula (Rigidae) cutefracta, Cooke.
Mild. Pileus fleshy, firm, dry, opaque, variable in colour, green, purple, dull red, & c., convex, then a little depressed in the centre, cuticle cracking from the margin inwards into minute firmly adnate areolae, otherwise even ; flesh beneath the cuticle tinged with purple ; stem firm, solid, nearly equal, or a little attenuated above, smooth, slightly tinged with purple ; gills somewhat crowded, narrowed behind, furcate, adnexed, or nearly free, white.
On the ground in woods. Epping, Kew Gardens, Dinedor, and other places around Hereford.
Pileus 3-4 inches or more. Stem 3 inches long, often 1 inch tick. Allied to R. virescens, wich it resembles in the cracking of the cuticle, but differs in the purple tint beneath, even in green specimens, and in the tinted stem, as well as in the colour of the pileus, which is of a darker and different shade of green, and sometimes of a deep bluish-purple, as well as of madder-red.
