Phellodon niger

(Fr. : Fr.) P. Karst.

Terrestrial hydnoid fungi are a very interesting group: many species seem to be good indicators of the quality of the environment where they grow. The genus Phellodon is characterized by the white spore print (like Bankera, whereas Hydnellum and Sarcodon have brown spores); Phellodon niger is easily recognized by the very dark colours of the cap and of the flesh, which is completely black.
