Russula atrorubens

Quél.

Russula atrorubens belongs in subsect. Atorpurpurinae, a group of acrid tasting species with purple or greenish colours on the cap and white gills and stipe. It is very similar to Russula fragilis, from which it may be separated on account of the different ecology (R. atrorubens is associated with conifers) and of the even, not crenulate gill edge. (m.f.)
